Philomena Darius is a chemistry instructor at the Temple of Learning and mentor to Elisha Grey, Galen Toth, and Ishmael Endymion, who were all her chemistry students. She is a premiere chemist and perfumer, founder of her own perfume manufacturing company, a petite, fine-boned woman with an acute sense of smell (a “nose” in the perfume industry). Despite her diminutive stature, she commands the respect of all of her students, present and former, because of her attention to detail and knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry.
Her laboratory, a clean and modern building, is in an area of the capitol where it is bounded by a large park to minimize any pollution from dust being kicked up by service trucks; her home, equally clean and neat, is adjacent to it and reflects the needs of a "nose" -- nothing perfumed or dyed is in her house at all. Her clothing reflects the same meticulous care.
Elisha Grey asks for her help on a number of cases -- involving a perfume, a mouthwash, and even going to the farm country to sniff out what food might be poisoned. As the dream of Kiara Ptolmai's healing center begins to take shape, she offers to plant the grounds with scented plants conducive to well-being.
