It seems so long ago: 1990, when I first began writing the first of three stories that would become (though I didn't know it) the seminal volume of The Casebook of Elisha Grey.
With the subsequent changes in internet technology as well as advancements in both social media and the Cloud, the e-book platform became available, and so I finally published, after extensively rewriting, the first Casebook in September 2013. Working with the stories again brought the characters back to life -- and they created more story lines.
Casebook II was published in 2015 and as I finalized that draft, the characters had more experiences to share. And so it continues -- with Casebook III just published March 2016 and the stories for Casebook IV and V outlined, the need for a Story Bible just for my own sanity became apparent, and that too has just been published and registered with WGAW.
The Story Bible not only is an organizing reference for me, it is also a way to find a home for the story series in the medium of cable or streaming television.
I now realize that the larger story arc of the series that will end with Casebook V needs to incorporate a shift in characters' relationships and an additional focus on the metaphysical in order to accommodate a new series. The stories germinated in outline I now see chain together with foreshadowings of future story lines, in turn creating new characters while fleshing out the established characters by revealing their complexity and contradictions as they face the challenges of the changing times in Atlantis.
As I write this blogpost, the new book series (which will have a new title and I'm not certain what it is yet) has two volumes of three stories each roughly outlined, and by the time I've finished Casebook V I wouldn't be at all surprised if Elisha Grey, Kiara Ptolmai, Chiron, Kamay Pellay, Ishmael Endymion and the Visitors have taken me into volume VIII and even IX. You'll meet the Visitors in Casebook V. In turn, this expansion requires more research on my part to make the details of Atlantis as real as possible.
As a writer, you'd think that I'd like to take sole credit for all this creativity. I'm not sure that's either completely honest or completely fair. The characters come to life and tell me more about their existence. What I do is organize the information and type it. With an irony that some of my friends will recognize, I am, in essence, their secretary.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
