Students in search of an affordable flat, if they're dedicated to their studies -- as Elisha Grey and Kiara Ptolmai are -- want a place that's affordable and has a landlady who also does the housekeeping.
Twylah Tecumseh provides just that. In her building, where she lives on the ground floor, she manages one small two-level loft flat for travelers, and an upstairs two bedroom flat for tenants. She represents the quintessential older woman who has had a family, and in later life lives alone. After caring for collective children with her late partner, she now cares for a sleek, spacious building -- 83 Dragonfly Terrace -- nestled into a hillside that protects it from the strong setting sun. With great care, she changes the draperies, rugs, and slipcovers in her flats every season as the daylight shifts; she cares for the fish in the indoor pond in the two-story high foyer; feeds the birds in the aviary along the terrace on the hillside behind the upper story flat; and she makes small breakfasts for her tenants.
As Elisha Grey's investigations progress, she also becomes an additional resource as a concierge, observer, and guardian of their rooms. However, she does take issue with Mara Grey's visit because she doesn't know that Mara Grey -- a hetira -- also is Elisha Grey's older collective sister; and finds Elisha Grey's tendency to scatter his belongings through the small dining area which he captures as his office somewhat perturbing.
