Samax Rex Pahadron is a wealthy businessman with an elaborate park-surrounded compound in the capitol. His cherubic appearance, jovial personality and flamboyant style belie his being a criminal mastermind. Although he has legal means to earn money, he also controls a network of illegal drug dealers – despite drugs being available legally, albeit at higher expense, in Atlantis. In addition, he recruits his own ranks of prostitutes, who are much less expensive than independent hetirae such as Elisha Grey’s eldest collective sister Mara.
In The Odalisques, Elisha Grey and Kiara Ptolmai investigate the case of several young women below the age of majority, which in Atlantis is 25. The discovery that the young women have been recruited to be odalisques – multiple wives for a wealthy young man living on the coast of the Middle Sea – forces Elisha and Kiara to travel by airship to that region of the world. Upon interviewing one of the young women abducted, they discover that the person behind the transaction may have been Samax Rex Pahadron.
In The Missing Daughter, when Chief Nalte asks for Elisha Grey’s assistance in finding a young woman who has not returned home after going on a search, with her collective parents’ consent, for her natural parents, they discover when they interview her natural mother, a member of the hetirae, that she doesn’t know who the father is, though one possibility is Samax Rex Pahadron. When the young woman is found, what they discover is how Samax Rex Pahadron “interviews” young women to add to his stable of prostitutes.
And that’s just the beginning of Elisha Grey’s attempt to unravel Samax Rex Pahadron’s criminal knots weaving through Atlantean culture.
